NEWS OF THE ARRESTS shot through Cupid like a bolt of lightning. By noon the following day, small knots of men and boys lingered grim-faced outside the Outlaw Grandpa’s jail-cell window, talk of the “get a rope” variety rampant.

Because the jail contained only two cells, Ben and Ethan were being held side by side. That meant that, although the two exchanged not a single word, Ben heard everything Ethan heard, and vice versa.

So both quickly became aware that Ben was being hailed as a hero for shooting a rustler—Ethan.

Only by now, Ben wasn’t too sure of anything, including the righteousness of his cause. Hour after hour, he and Ethan Turner sat, separated only by a wall of bars; hour after hour, Ben wallowed in his own remorse over actually shooting another human being. Ethan just sat with his face toward the wall and kept his own counsel.

Granny came to visit, and the first thing she said was, “If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a hundred times, that temper’s gonna get you in a peck of trouble someday, Ben Cameron. Looks like this is the day.”

But then she hugged him—Dwight had opened the cell door and let her come inside, rules he damned.

“Kids upset?” Ben asked around the tightness in his chest and throat.

“They don’t know nothin’ about it,” she assured him. “Before they do, you’ll be outta here.” Her voice rose. “How’s it goin’, Ethan? Doc patch you up all right?”

“Right as rain,” the old crook replied. “Much obliged for your interest, Miz Cameron.”

“You wasn’t tryin’ to make off with any Arrow hosses, were you, Ethan?”

“No, ma’am, I surely wasn’t.”

Etta May Cameron turned back to her grandson. “See? This is all a big mistake. I bet if we all set down and talked it over, we’d find a way outta this mess.”

Maybe they would have, if the door leading to the marshal’s office hadn’t crashed open to allow the dramatic entrance of Julie, breathing hard and waving a newspaper in the air.

“Special insert to the Cupid Chronicles!” she declared, thrusting a single sheet through the bars of Ethan’s cell. “Read it and weep!”
